Amandla! (Awethu)

South Africa has an estimated 5,2 million people living with HIV and AIDS. Together with unprotected sex, mother-to-child transmission is the main infection route. There are currently 1,5million AIDS orphans and the proportion of maternal orphans, those who have lost their parents by AIDS but are not infected with the viruses themselves, is over 70%.

The Amandla!(Awethu) series gives an insight into the life of children who have been effected by the AIDS epidemic. The photographs demonstrate how the orphan’s positive attitude, along with the help from charities have been improving their future. However, it should not go unnoticed more aid is needed.
